Videos are widely spread on the internet, and children enjoy watching freaky accidents on youtube.
Why not use this in our favour? How can we make the foreign language a more real experience to the kids?
Good ways to use Youtube:
Film trailers: Get the children to guess what the film is about, or to express their opinion about the film. A brilliant way to introduce a dreaded folio piece.
(Simpsons, the movie, in the Quebec dialect)
News: Watch news clips in the target language. Children can then write a newspaper article about it in the target language, speak to their peers about it, etc...
(Tagesschau, German news program, about Tchernobyl in 1986)
TV adverts: Why not after get your pupils to make their own TV advert for a product of their choice?
(Spanish advert for C&A)
Music Videos: Kids enjoy the music and the dances typical to the country. A good way to introduce a bit of culture! Can be transformed into a fill-in-the-gaps task, and pupils can write their own song (and direct their video clip) in the language as a follow-up exercise.
(Kamini, French rapper)
Advantages of using videos:
Everybody dreads having to use the phone abroad, because listening without seeing the facial expression and body language of the interlocutor is one of the most difficult exercises.
Pictures help students concentrate on the exercise.
It makes a good change from the eternal book and tapes the teacher never manages to get to the right spot.
And quite simply, it makes you look pretty cool in the eyes of the pupils!
